Krishna Consciousness at Home
When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu established and promoted the Harinama Sankirtana movement, He did so by visiting devotee's homes and conducting programs there. In the same way, we at New Gundicha are committed to providing an environment in which our community can cultivate their spiritual lives here at the Temple as well as at home. We fully support our congregation's efforts to develop home programs throughout the New England region and encourage everyone to participate.
What is Nama Hatta and Bhakti Vrksa?
Nama Hatta ("the Marketplace of the Holy Name"). The marketplace of the Holy Name was founded in the 1500's in West Bengal by Sri Nityananada Raya on the Island of Godruma in Navadvip. Based on the principle that the price for chanting purely the Names of God is sincere faith. With however much faith one possesses, that much benefit can be derived from the chanting. One does not need to leave their home, family or position in life. One needs only to come to the market, buy what one desires and take it home. Thus Nama Hatta is for teaching the world to advance spiritually at home. It does not require extraneous endeavor or great investments of money. Any place where one can easily obtain the mercy of receiving the pure Holy Names of God to chant is a part of the Nama Hatta
Bhakti Vrksa ("tree of devotion") is the name given to a system wherein a group of devotees gather to study scripture, chant the Holy Names, worship and associate. Each member of a Bhakti Vrksa group will then branch out and establish a separate group while maintaing their connection with the original group. In this way, the process of devotional service can be spread through a grass-roots effort.
