Vedic Ceremonies for Life Transitions
Samskaras are traditional Vedic ceremonies performed by qualified priests -usually within temples. It is valuable to perform Vedic ceremonies in the Temple because the Lord is particularly present in His installed Murti, or Divine Form. However, some ceremonies are best performed at home, either for the comfort of family members, or to purify the dwelling.
Vedic ceremonies are highly beneficial, sanctifying and increasing auspicious influences. They help one to progress peacefully in life to the ultimate goal -attaining the Absolute Truth- by smoothing the path of spiritual progress.
Samskaras rectify and sanctify relationships between family and friends, parents and children, husband and wife. They drive away evil influences and attract the blessings of saintly Vaisnavas. Most importantly, Vedic ceremonies provide a focus for the yuga dharma, the chanting of the names of God.
Vedic ceremonies are performed at particular times during life and are considered rites of passage. They purify the body and soul and prepare one for devotional service to God by invoking auspicious qualities for those who perform them. They are performed for the benefit of both the individual and the family.
The Significance of Homa
Homa is a ceremony in which various Names and Forms of the Lord are invoked in a sacred fire that has been kindled according to the guidelines of the Vedic scriptures. Certain special offerings are made into the fire while Mantras are chanted. The combination of the powerful energy of the fire and the Sanskrit mantras creates extremely auspicious and purifying vibrations that are beneficial to all who attend the ceremony.
The smoke that rises from Homa contains a powerful healing energy, and as it rises to the heavens it purifies the atmosphere, both physically and subtly, encouraging a peaceful environment and gentle weather. The sacred Homa fire can rectify negative karma.
If a person is experiencing difficulties of any kind, performing Homa will help to lessen those difficulties. The sacred Homa can make life more conducive to spiritual practice, which ultimately leads to the highest attainment, love of Krishna.
The Significance of Abhiseka
In Abhiseka, various auspicious substances like milk, ghee and honey are poured in a steady stream over the Murti, or Divine Form of the Lord, while specific Mantras are recited. As the offerings are gently poured over the Murti, divine blessings radiate out towards all those present, providing protection, purification, and spiritual elevation.
These sacred ceremonies purify the Earth's atmosphere, uplift the community, and contribute to the health and prosperity of the individual. Abhiseka is always accompanied and completed by Harinama Sankirtana, the yuga dharma.
